House Approves ‘Take It Down’ Act to Combat Deepfake Revenge Imagery

House Passes Landmark Deepfake Ban in 409–2 Vote

In a rare show of bipartisan unity, the U.S. House voted 409–2 to pass the Take It Down Act, a sweeping bill that criminalizes the creation and distribution of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfake content. The legislation, co-sponsored by lawmakers from both parties, now heads to President Trump, who is expected to sign it into law.

The bill targets a growing digital threat by establishing criminal penalties, platform takedown requirements, civil remedies, and protections for minors. It addresses a legal gap in existing “revenge porn” laws, which rarely cover AI-generated fabrications.

Backed by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar and Representatives Elvira Salazar and Madeline Dean, the act balances urgent privacy protections with First Amendment safeguards. Its passage marks a major step in U.S. efforts to regulate AI-driven abuse and defend digital dignity.
