House Passes Bill Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote

House Passes GOP-Backed SAVE Act to Require Proof of Citizenship for Voting

The Republican-led U.S. House passed the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in a 220–208 vote, aiming to require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. The bill, backed by Donald Trump and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), would also remove noncitizens from voter rolls. While polls show broad support for voter ID laws, 208 Democrats opposed the measure, arguing there’s no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting.

The bill faces tough odds in the Senate, needing 60 votes to advance. Democrats argue it could suppress voter access and is based on unfounded claims of election fraud. Republicans say it’s necessary to restore faith in the electoral system amid concerns over illegal immigration and election integrity.
