Johnson, Republicans Give Big Update on January 6 Investigation

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Barry Loudermilk are at odds over how to proceed with the investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Johnson wants to narrow the focus and end the probe, especially into former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, while Loudermilk seeks a broader mandate.

The dispute has stalled the subcommittee’s launch. Loudermilk insists on independence and the ability to report findings publicly. Johnson has promised full funding, but the investigation’s scope may exclude security readiness and future measures.

Loudermilk criticizes the former committee as biased against Trump and wants to redirect focus to wider security failures. The situation reflects the GOP’s broader strategy to reshape previous investigations and shield Trump from accountability.

Committee structure and member selection remain undecided.
