JUST IN: Panama Caves, Moves Away From China After Pressure From Trump

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino announced on Sunday that Panama will not renew its agreement with China’s Belt and Road Initiative following talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. President Donald Trump had previously accused Panama of violating the terms of the treaty signed by former President Carter, citing unfair canal fees and growing ties with China. After their discussions in Panama City, Mulino revealed that the agreement would be up for renewal in one to two years, with the possibility of ending it sooner. This decision is a significant blow to China’s influence in the region, as Panama was the first Latin American country to join the initiative, which involves Chinese investments in global infrastructure projects.
