President-elect Donald Trump has filed a legal motion against Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan, who has been overseeing Trump’s hush money case. Merchan, who had initially hinted at potentially dismissing Trump’s conviction following a Supreme Court ruling, now faces Trump’s legal team’s request to delay or terminate a sentencing hearing set for Friday. Trump’s lawyers argue that his conviction should be put on hold to protect the presidency and prevent harm to federal operations. Merchan, who presided over Trump’s 2024 conviction on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records, is expected to issue a ruling soon, potentially sentencing Trump to community service or a fine. The case stems from Trump’s coordination with his lawyer, Michael Cohen, over a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels. Critics have raised concerns about Merchan’s impartiality due to his daughter’s political ties.
