After stepping down from his Senate leadership role, Sen. Mitch McConnell took aim at President Donald Trump during a “60 Minutes” interview. McConnell expressed his disapproval of Trump pardoning nearly 1,500 people convicted for their involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot. He also stated that he has not spoken with Trump in “quite a while,” adding that he was “very upset” about the events of that day. McConnell described the attack as an insurrection and held Trump “practically and morally responsible” for provoking the riot. Regarding the pardons, McConnell called them a mistake. This comes amid rising tensions within the Republican Party, with conservatives criticizing McConnell’s recent votes and interactions with Democrats, calling for his removal and censure.
