Melania Trump, the incoming first lady, is breaking with tradition by not meeting with current first lady Jill Biden before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. Typically, the outgoing and incoming first ladies meet, as Michelle Obama did with Melania in 2017. However, Melania has not engaged with Jill Biden, despite their husbands’ cordial phone call. This comes after the contentious 2020 election and Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen race. Melania is also reportedly planning a part-time role as first lady during Trump’s second term, with no announced agenda or staff appointments yet. The last time the two women likely saw each other was at Rosalynn Carter’s funeral in November 2024.
