As summer draws families to pools and beaches, Florida swim instructor Nikki Scarnati is raising awareness about how the color of a child’s swimsuit can impact water safety. In a viral TikTok video, Nikki’s two-year-old daughter Claire wears a light blue swimsuit that blends almost perfectly with the pool water, making her difficult to see—even in calm conditions.
Nikki explains that blue swimsuits, commonly sold for kids, make spotting a child in water much harder, which can delay rescue efforts. Experts like Adam Katchmarchi of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance advise choosing bright, high-contrast colors such as neon yellow, orange, or hot pink to improve visibility in pools and natural bodies of water.
While swimsuit color is an important safety tool, active supervision remains critical. With drowning being a leading cause of death among young children, Nikki hopes her video’s millions of views will encourage parents to make safer choices. Her message: every detail counts—especially the color of your child’s swimsuit—in preventing tragic accidents.
