Federal health officials are investigating a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs, with 95 reported illnesses and more expected as investigations continue. The eggs, produced by Country Eggs, LLC, were sold in cartons labeled Large Brown Cage Free Sunshine Yolks and distributed across multiple states.
Further complicating the issue, the same eggs were repackaged and sold under other brand names, including Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets, making it harder for consumers to identify affected products.
Salmonella symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. While most healthy adults recover without treatment, young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.
The CDC and FDA advise consumers to check their egg cartons carefully and avoid consuming eggs from the recalled brands. Recalled eggs should be discarded or returned to the store, and any surfaces or containers that contacted the eggs should be thoroughly cleaned.
Health officials also emphasize safe egg handling practices, including cooking eggs until yolks and whites are firm, avoiding raw or undercooked egg dishes, and washing hands and utensils after handling eggs.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone experiencing severe or persistent symptoms after eating eggs should seek medical care promptly to avoid complications.
