In September 2022, Kristian Harris, a 2-year-old from Mississippi, was tragically killed by Makallie Durham, his mother’s close friend. Makallie, 25, pled guilty to child abuse and capital murder, and was sentenced to life in prison. Before her arrest, she contacted Kristian’s mother, Justin Hurd, asking for help as she was being taken into custody by police. Shocked and angry, Justin told Makallie she deserved to be jailed. Kristian had been severely abused over several days while in Makallie’s care, and his younger sister, K’Helani, was also found with bruises. After Kristian’s death, Justin discovered that Makallie had frequently taken care of the children without raising any suspicion. Despite the pain of losing her son, Justin expressed that justice could never fully heal the hurt. The family also faced cruel online attacks blaming Justin for the tragedy. She has since welcomed two more children into her life.
