My son taught me more than I had taught him when we went out for milkshakes.

On the way home one day, my son Nolan said something that deeply moved me: “He looked lonely, Dad.” It was such a simple statement, but it struck a chord. Nolan didn’t overanalyze the situation like adults often do; he simply noticed someone in need and gave what he had—his presence and compassion.

That evening, I thought about how often I had been too consumed by my own burdens to truly see what others around me might be feeling. Nolan’s words reminded me that compassion isn’t complicated or expensive. It only requires being present and willing to share, no matter how small the gesture.

Since that day, Nolan and I have made a tradition of going back to the same spot every Friday for milkshakes. It’s become a meaningful ritual, a way to celebrate empathy and kindness in everyday life.

The staff always serve us milkshakes with two straws. It’s a small detail, but it feels like an unspoken acknowledgment of Nolan’s kindness—ready for anyone who might need a friend or a shared moment.

This simple act of sharing a milkshake together has grown into a powerful reminder for me. It encourages me to slow down, pay attention to others, and offer compassion even when life gets busy.

Nolan’s innocent heart and ability to see loneliness with such clarity inspire me to be more present and empathetic every day.

Our Friday milkshake tradition isn’t just about a treat—it’s a commitment to kindness and a symbol of hope that even small gestures can make a difference in someone’s life.
