New polling shows a sharp partisan and generational divide over patriotism in America, with Democrats and younger generations reporting far less pride in the country than Republicans and older cohorts. A survey by GOP pollster National Research Inc. found that 91% of Republicans identify as patriots, compared to just 50% of Democrats. Among 2024 voters, 90% of Trump supporters said they’re patriotic, versus 55% of Kamala Harris voters.
A recent Gallup poll echoed those findings, showing only 36% of Democrats are “extremely” or “very” proud to be American—down from 62% in 2024 and the lowest level Gallup has ever recorded. Republican pride rose to 92%. Patriotism also declines across generations: just 41% of Gen Z identify as very or extremely proud, compared to 75% of Baby Boomers. Analysts say the trend is driven largely by Democrats in each age group. Even Democratic Senator John Fetterman publicly criticized the lack of pride, calling it “wrong” in the “greatest country in the world.” Experts warn the trend reflects deeper national divisions and cultural shifts.
