Newsom’s Gun Control Record Contradicts Claim of Supporting Second Amendment

In a recent interview with Shawn Ryan, California Governor Gavin Newsom claimed he’s “not anti-gun at all,” despite a long history of supporting aggressive gun control. While accepting a California-compliant SIG Sauer pistol, Newsom said his concerns focus on “large capacity magazine clips” and “weapons of war” like the AR-15. He also expressed worry about civilians “out-gunning” the police.

However, his legislative record tells a different story. Since 2019, Newsom has signed nearly 70 gun control laws, including SB 1327, allowing private lawsuits over illegal firearms. In 2023, he supported an 11% tax on gun and ammo sales. His anti-gun stance goes back to 2005, when, as San Francisco mayor, he backed a handgun ban. He also led the 2016 Proposition 63 campaign banning high-capacity magazines.

Meanwhile, ICE raids in California uncovered unaccompanied migrant children working on marijuana farms. DHS criticized Newsom’s outrage at the raids, asking: “Why are there children working at a marijuana facility, Gavin?”

President Trump later authorized ICE to arrest violent protesters “using whatever means necessary.”
