The Trump administration announced it will terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, effective September 2, 2025, stating that conditions have improved enough for safe return. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, after consulting with relevant agencies, concluded that Haiti no longer meets TPS requirements.
A DHS spokesperson emphasized that TPS is meant to be temporary and said resources would be available for returnees. However, Democrats reacted with outrage, calling the move dangerous and cruel amid Haiti’s ongoing gang violence and humanitarian crisis. Florida Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Maxwell Frost, and Lois Frankel condemned the decision, citing safety concerns and accusing the administration of racism and dishonesty. New York Attorney General Letitia James and Florida Rep. Laura Gillen also criticized the policy, warning it would tear families apart. Former U.S. diplomat Luis Moreno described Haiti as a failed state and slammed the move as racist. Amnesty International demanded the U.S. reverse what it called an inhumane and dangerous decision.
