An independent panel reviewing the July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, found “deep flaws” in the Secret Service. The panel identified numerous mistakes and systemic issues that allowed the attack to happen, calling for urgent reform to protect top government officials. It criticized the agency for a lack of critical thinking, unclear security ownership, and cultural issues among personnel. The report recommended new leadership with outside experience and a focus on the Secret Service’s core protective mission. The panel stressed that without reform, similar incidents could occur again. In response, Trump nominated Sean Curran, head of his personal security detail, as the new Secret Service director.
