Kansas City firefighter paramedic Graham Hoffman, 29, was fatally stabbed in the heart by a patient during a routine medical call on Sunday.
Hoffman and a colleague were transporting 39-year-old Shanetta Bossell to a hospital after police found her walking disoriented along a freeway.
While en route, Bossell pulled a knife and stabbed Hoffman, who screamed, “She stabbed me in the heart,” before collapsing. She then tried to hijack the ambulance and bit a pursuing officer. Despite emergency efforts, Hoffman died at North Kansas City Hospital. Bossell faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, and is held on a $1 million bond. She had been released on bond just two days earlier for a separate assault case. Officials, including Mayor Quinton Lucas, mourned Hoffman’s death, calling it a devastating loss for the community and highlighting the risks first responders face. Prosecutors are considering the death penalty or life imprisonment.
