RFK Jr. Clears Key Hurdle, Will Get Full Senate Vote Next Week

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. moved a step closer to becoming Secretary of Health and Human Services after the Senate voted 52-47 to advance his nomination. A final vote is expected next week. The Senate Finance Committee had previously advanced Kennedy’s nomination, despite doubts from GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy over his vaccine stance. Cassidy, after discussions with Vice President J.D. Vance, decided to support Kennedy, citing commitments from the administration on health-related issues. Kennedy’s nomination has faced opposition, notably from former Vice President Mike Pence’s organization, which criticized his past support for abortion. Kennedy, who previously endorsed a ban on abortion after the first trimester, has reassured Republicans, stating his personal views wouldn’t impact his HHS policies. He emphasized his commitment to continuing anti-abortion policies from the Trump administration if confirmed.
