Romney Calls For Bipartisanship In Farewell Speech After Fighting Trump For Years

Senator Mitt Romney Urges Unity and Warns Against Partisanship in Farewell Senate Speech

Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney, in his farewell address to the Senate, called on lawmakers to prioritize unity over partisan politics, reflecting on his 25 years of public service.

Romney expressed pride in his achievements but acknowledged frustrations, particularly with the nation’s growing debt burden. He highlighted how interest on the national debt limits critical spending, saying, “Without the burden of the interest on that debt, we would be able to spend three times as much as we do on military procurement… or double the amount on Social Security benefits.”

He also shared a surprising positive note, saying he enjoyed working with senators from both parties, though he won’t miss “myriad meaningless votes.”

While not naming names, Romney appeared to criticize figures who “tear at our unity” and “replace love with hate,” a likely reference to President-elect Donald Trump, whose policies and rhetoric he has often opposed.

Romney concluded by reminding that politics alone cannot solve the country’s challenges, urging lawmakers to focus on cooperation for America’s future.
