Supreme Court Reinstates Anti-Money-Laundering Statute In Emergency Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), a federal anti-money laundering law, while a legal challenge continues in lower courts. The CTA mandates that millions of small businesses disclose personal information about their owners to combat financial crimes. The emergency stay halts a federal judge’s injunction that had blocked the law. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, arguing the government had not shown urgency. The case will return to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The DOJ claims delaying implementation could harm national security and anti-money laundering efforts. Business groups and anti-regulatory advocates are trying to delay the law’s enforcement, which was set to begin this month.
