Supreme Court Turns Away Key Cases

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear appeals challenging Delaware’s ban on assault-style rifles and large-capacity magazines, as well as Maryland’s handgun licensing law.

Gun rights advocates sought to block Delaware’s 2022 law prohibiting semiautomatic rifles like the AR-15 and magazines holding over 17 rounds.

However, the Court let lower court rulings stand, which denied injunctions against the law. The plaintiffs argued these laws violated the Second Amendment, but courts upheld them.

The Court also rejected a separate challenge to Maryland’s licensing process, which includes fingerprinting, training, and background checks. These decisions leave the laws in place for now.

Though the Supreme Court has taken a strong pro-gun stance in past rulings, it chose not to engage with these specific cases at this time. Other gun-related appeals remain pending.
