Sydney Sweeney Returns to Social Media Amid Controversy
Sydney Sweeney broke a month-long social media silence by posting behind-the-scenes photos from her new film Americana, calling it a project she made with friends. The post came as backlash continued over her recent American Eagle ad, in which she says, “My jeans are blue,” followed by a voiceover: “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” Critics accused the ad of promoting genetic superiority through wordplay, while others said it objectified her, comparing it to Brooke Shields’ controversial 1980s Calvin Klein campaign.
Comment sections under her movie post quickly filled with both criticism and support. American Eagle responded, denying any racial undertones and insisting the campaign was solely about fashion: “Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Despite the storm, Sweeney promoted Americana, a drama about people entangled in violence over a stolen Native American ghost shirt. Early reviews are mixed—some call it slow, others praise its writing and performances. Americana hits theaters August 15.
