TMZ Under Fire for Laughter During Coverage of Charlie Kirk’s Death
TMZ faced intense backlash after laughter and applause were heard during its live coverage of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The 31-year-old conservative activist was fatally shot in the neck during a speaking event at Utah Valley University and later died from his injuries.
As news broke, TMZ anchors Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere reported the story live. But background laughter and clapping led many viewers to believe staff were reacting inappropriately to Kirk’s death. Outrage erupted online, with one user claiming TMZ employees were “cheering” as Kirk’s death was announced. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer called it “shameful and disgusting.”
In a video apology, Levin clarified the noise came from a separate group watching a live car chase elsewhere in the newsroom. He insisted that if anyone had laughed at Kirk’s death, they’d be immediately terminated.
Latibeaudiere acknowledged the timing was deeply unfortunate, but emphasized the reactions were unrelated to the tragic event. Both anchors expressed regret for the confusion and distress caused.
TMZ later issued a written apology, admitting it was “tone deaf” to have a car chase on during such serious coverage. While denying intentional disrespect, the network apologized for any offense caused during its reporting of Kirk’s death.
