Trump’s Approval Ratings Hold Amid Tariff Turmoil and Controversial Policies
Despite a chaotic start to his second term—marked by mass government firings, surging egg prices, volatile markets, and escalating global tariff wars—Donald Trump’s approval ratings remain surprisingly stable.
Following a 25% tariff imposed on steel and aluminum, with swift retaliation from Canada and Europe, Trump defended his aggressive trade policies in a congressional speech, calling his presidency “swift and unrelenting.” He also doubled down on immigration crackdowns, government cuts, and the removal of diversity initiatives.
According to Gallup, Trump’s average approval stands at 46%, up from his first-term average of 41%. A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 44% approval in his first month, and 47% approval of his immigration stance. An SSRS/CNN poll revealed just 39% support for his tariff strategy, with 61% disapproving.
Despite criticism over economic disruption, Trump remains more popular than VP JD Vance and even Congress, with some polls placing his approval above President Biden’s. Whether this support endures depends on how his controversial policies impact Americans long-term.
