President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has requested the U.S. Supreme Court halt several cases related to executive actions taken by President Joe Biden on student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed motions to pause proceedings in these cases while the Biden administration reconsiders the policies’ basis and soundness. The Supreme Court was set to hear arguments in March or April, but Trump’s DOJ seeks to delay all written brief deadlines, effectively putting the cases on indefinite hold.
The student loan forgiveness initiative, which canceled debt for over 5 million students, has faced numerous legal challenges. Republican state attorneys general argue that Biden exceeded his authority by implementing the forgiveness without Congressional approval. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals recently blocked Biden’s “borrow defense” rule, which canceled loans for students defrauded by their schools, citing regulatory and statutory issues.
The Trump administration’s request suggests that his administration may eventually rescind Biden’s policies, making the legal cases irrelevant. Additionally, three environmental cases challenge regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency during Biden’s term. These regulations are contested by critics of Biden’s “climate” agenda, while Trump has actively worked to promote domestic fossil fuel energy production through executive orders.
