President Donald Trump stated the U.S. would either reclaim control of the Panama Canal or take “powerful” action, accusing Panama of violating agreements by allowing China to control the waterway. Trump argued that the canal, originally given to Panama, should not be under Chinese influence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who visited Panama, warned that the U.S. would retaliate if Panama didn’t limit China’s role. Rubio also linked this issue to broader concerns about China’s influence in strategic areas like Greenland, suggesting China could establish military operations there. He stressed that the U.S. might need more control over such locations to safeguard national interests, particularly if it’s already responsible for defense.
