U.S. removes deportation protections for 348,000 Venezuelans

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly 350,000 Venezuelans, citing improvements in the country’s economy, public health, and crime rates. However, many Venezuelan families in the U.S. are devastated, with some fearing for their safety if deported. Ana Maria Pirela, a 26-year-old pregnant migrant, shared her distress after her husband lost his job. Activists, like Beatriz Olavarriat, warn that returning to Venezuela could be life-threatening or lead to imprisonment for those who have spoken out against the regime. Under Trump’s administration, TPS for Venezuelans was revoked, and future protections remain uncertain. With Venezuela facing ongoing economic hardship, the situation for those at risk of deportation remains dire.
