As the trend of unconventional homes continues to rise, Jo Ann Ussery’s transformation of a decommissioned Boeing 727 into a livable mansion remains one of the most creative examples. After her home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed in 1993, Ussery—facing financial hardship—began exploring alternative housing options.
Her brother-in-law, an air traffic controller, suggested something bold: living in an airplane.
Ussery bought a retired Boeing 727 for just $2,000 and invested around $30,000 to convert it into a fully functional home. The plane’s 138-foot interior was reimagined into a surprisingly luxurious space featuring three bedrooms, a kitchen, a cozy living room, and even a laundry area. The cockpit was creatively turned into a master bathroom complete with a soaking tub, offering panoramic views and a sense of floating in the sky.
From 1995 to 1999, Ussery lived in the plane before turning it into a museum. Unfortunately, during a move, the plane was severely damaged. Still, her unique home stands as a lasting symbol of innovation, adaptability, and personal resilience.
