Authorities in Putnam County have seized $7 million worth of cocaine in a major drug bust. The operation underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking in the region, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.

A routine traffic stop in Putnam County, Indiana, over the weekend revealed a large-scale narcotics operation, showing how standard enforcement can uncover significant criminal activity. The Indiana State Police reported that a trooper conducted a compliance inspection of a semi tractor-trailer around 1:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 70 near the 41-mile marker. A K-9 unit alerted during the inspection, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle, which led to a major discovery.

Officers found approximately 309 pounds of cocaine hidden in the truck’s sleeper berth. Authorities estimate the street value of the drugs at roughly $7 million. The semi was traveling from Joplin to Richmond at the time, demonstrating the cross-state nature of large-scale drug distribution networks and the importance of proactive interdiction efforts.

Two men, Gurpreet Singh, 25, of Fresno, California, and Jasveer Singh, 30, of Santa Clara, California, were arrested and taken to the Putnam County Jail. Both were charged with Level 2 felony dealing in narcotics under Indiana law. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed detainers on the individuals, indicating federal interest alongside state-level prosecution.

Officials highlighted that the trooper involved is a full-time interdiction officer with the Drug Enforcement Section of the Indiana State Police. Such officers are trained to identify and intercept large-scale shipments before they reach local communities. The stop demonstrates how routine traffic enforcement, combined with specialized training and canine units, can significantly disrupt organized criminal operations.

Authorities stressed that the charges against the two suspects remain allegations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as judicial proceedings unfold. This case reflects the careful legal processes that guide both arrest and prosecution while maintaining public safety.

The seizure underscores the scale and sophistication of interstate drug trafficking, as well as the critical role of law enforcement in intercepting illegal substances before they reach communities. Routine inspections, vigilance, and specialized interdiction training collectively serve as key tools in combating the spread of narcotics, highlighting how everyday policing can have significant, far-reaching impacts on public safety.
