Italy Mourns Teenage Skating Star Matilda Ferrari
Italy is mourning the tragic loss of 15-year-old figure skater Matilda Ferrari, who died in a road accident on her way to school. The incident occurred in Giustino, a town in Trentino in the Italian Alps, as she crossed the road to catch her morning bus. She was struck by a cement truck. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Matilda died at the scene.
Initial findings suggest the truck had a green light when she stepped into the street. Matilda was walking with two friends and headed to school in nearby Tione, as she did every day. The road where the crash happened is known as a busy and dangerous stretch, with prior close calls, raising fresh concerns about student safety.
“This is a terrible tragedy that leaves us speechless,” said Giustino’s mayor, Manuel Cosi. “We are devastated.”
Matilda was a rising star in Italian figure skating, training daily with Sporting Ghiaccio Art Pinzolo. Despite a recent knee injury, she had made strong progress, placing third at the 2024 Italian Cup final. Her club shared a black-and-white tribute photo, writing they couldn’t imagine the rink without her.
Messages of grief and outrage flooded social media. “What a terrible death,” one read. Another added, “Too many crazy drivers.”
Police are investigating the crash, looking into possible mechanical failure or poor visibility. The tragedy has renewed debate over making student routes safer.
Friends and teachers remember Matilda as bright, driven, and full of dreams. Her death leaves a deep void in both her sport and her community.
