Government Shutdown Talks Collapse Amid Blame Game
Talks between Republicans and Democrats to avoid a government shutdown collapsed Monday, with both sides trading accusations. Vice President J.D. Vance and House Majority Leader Mike Johnson accused Democrats of “taking hostages” during negotiations, while Democrats warned Republicans would be blamed if the shutdown occurs.
Vance blamed Democrats’ “unreasonable demands” for the looming shutdown. He criticized their original $1.5 trillion spending proposal, saying it would allocate hundreds of billions to healthcare for illegal immigrants while many Americans face medical bills. Republicans rejected those terms and claimed they were unfairly labeled obstructionists.
He accused Democrats of using shutdown threats to pressure Republicans into conceding on spending priorities. “They’re trying to force us to accept things we know are bad for the country,” Vance said, calling the shutdown fights a “predictable political circus” where Democrats blame Republicans regardless of who is responsible.
Johnson targeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, calling their counterproposal wasteful. He highlighted demands for $1.5 trillion in new spending, including benefits for illegal immigrants, media subsidies, and $500 million in additional funding—measures Republicans say they cannot support.
Johnson reminded that during the Biden administration, Republicans have faced 13 shutdown threats but kept the government running when in the minority. “All we’re asking Democrats to do is the same,” he said, urging a cooperative approach to avoid a crisis.
