House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has sharply criticized the U.S. Supreme Court, accusing it of enabling former President Donald Trump to act like a monarch. In a CNN interview, Jeffries described the Court’s rulings as “shameful,” particularly those granting Trump broad presidential immunity. He argued these decisions undermine the Constitution’s checks and balances and contradict the Founding Fathers’ intention to limit executive power.
Jeffries expressed concern that Trump, with support from certain conservative justices, has eroded legal norms and weakened the Department of Justice’s independence. He warned that the Court’s leniency not only shields Trump from accountability but also sets a dangerous precedent for future presidents.
Although Trump still faces several legal challenges, Jeffries believes real accountability remains out of reach. He called for reforms to restore the DOJ’s credibility and emphasized the need for a Democratic-controlled Congress to effectively check executive overreach.
Jeffries also urged a broader reassessment of the Supreme Court’s role in expanding presidential power. He said recent rulings send a troubling message that presidents can act above the law, threatening democratic institutions and protections.
Labeling the current situation a “disaster” for American democracy, Jeffries called on lawmakers and the public to remain vigilant. He warned that continued judicial support for Trump’s actions could further erode constitutional safeguards and democratic norms.
