‘My Birthday Was Yesterday’: My Adopted So

A Birthday Surprise

I planned a magical party for my adopted son’s tenth birthday—balloons, lights, and cake. But instead of joy, he cried. “My birthday was yesterday. Today’s my brother’s birthday,” he whispered, revealing a secret I never knew.

The Wooden Box

He brought out a small wooden box filled with photos and notes. One picture showed two boys. “That’s me… and that’s my brother,” he said softly. The adoption agency had told us he was alone, but he had hidden the truth, afraid we wouldn’t want him if we knew.

Seeking Answers

Desperate for answers, I called the agency repeatedly but hit dead ends. Finally, a former social worker confessed, “There were two boys… they were separated.” My son’s brother had been adopted in another state, and they had grown up apart, unaware of each other’s lives.

Reunited

After months of searching, the boys finally met. The moment they embraced, tears flowed freely—they refused to let go. That year, two sets of candles burned side by side, and my son was no longer alone.

This experience taught me how deep family bonds run, and how important it is to honor every part of a child’s story. What started as a quiet birthday secret became a beautiful reunion and a new beginning for both brothers.
