Pressure and Prejudice
Society often pressures people to have children, while those who choose not to are labeled selfish. But when individuals with disabilities decide to become parents, they frequently face even harsher judgment and prejudice.
Lisa’s Decision
Over 20 years ago, Patti White’s daughter Lisa, who has Down syndrome, announced she was pregnant. Patti recalled, “My mind went in all directions. How could this be? Her boyfriend has Down syndrome too!” Despite the criticism, the family stood firmly behind Lisa’s choice.
Raising Nic
Lisa, who worked full-time and lived independently, prepared diligently for motherhood. Her son Nic was born prematurely and also has Down syndrome. Lisa shared, “It was hard for me to walk around when I was pregnant… I felt like I was going to throw up.”
After Nic’s father passed away, Lisa and Patti raised him together, forming a strong family unit.
Thriving Against the Odds
Now 24, Nic is thriving. “I have two moms,” he said with pride. Patti reflected, “They have overcome the odds and share tremendous love.”
