Two Months Later, Kansas Town Still Mourns Fallen Deputy Brandon Gaede
More than two months after a deadly shootout, the town of Phillipsburg, Kansas, is still grieving the loss of Deputy Brandon Gaede—a devoted officer, husband, and father whose final act was one of bravery.
The Night of the Shooting
On June 27, 2025, Gaede responded to reports of illegal fireworks in the small farming town of 2,300. While attempting to handcuff 27-year-old Kolton Griffith at a home on 1st Street, a struggle broke out. Griffith pulled a concealed weapon and shot Gaede. Though gravely wounded, the 30-year-old deputy returned fire, fatally striking Griffith. Gaede was rushed to the hospital but died at 10:24 p.m.
A Life of Service
Gaede’s path into law enforcement began in Thomas County, where he started as a jailer after earning an associate’s degree from Colby Community College. In 2017, he joined the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and was promoted to undersheriff in 2024—testament to his leadership and dedication.
A Community Rallies
Gaede leaves behind his wife and three young children. The community continues to support the family through a donation account at Farmers State Bank—still active as neighbors, friends, and strangers contribute in his honor.
A Lasting Legacy
“Brandon gave everything for his community,” one resident wrote. “We will never forget his sacrifice.”
For Phillipsburg, Gaede’s story remains a symbol of courage: a young deputy who defended his town until his final breath. As one neighbor put it, “Deputy Gaede died a hero—and he’s still protecting us in how we remember him.”
