The Man With The Roses

For ten years, a single white rose mysteriously appeared each June 4th on the narrator’s father’s grave. The family wondered who left it and why. This year, the narrator decided to uncover the truth, hiding behind a tree at dusk. An older man in a denim jacket appeared with a rose and a notebook. After a pause, the narrator asked about the flowers.

The man, Raul, shared a surprising story. Twenty years ago, when Raul was homeless and struggling with addiction, he tried to steal from the narrator’s father’s hardware store. Instead of punishing him, the father offered Raul a job—giving him work, shelter, food, and hope. Since the father’s death, Raul had honored him each year with a white rose symbolizing new beginnings.

Eventually, Raul was invited to dinner and became a cherished part of the family. He brought joy, gifts, and kindness, never taking more than he gave. Later, Raul reunited with his estranged daughter and met his grandson, finding healing and happiness. Sadly, he passed away from heart failure six months later, leaving a legacy of generosity.

At Raul’s funeral, many shared stories of his kindness, mirroring the man who once saved him. In a final letter, Raul left everything to the narrator’s family, urging them to continue the cycle of kindness.

Now, every June 4th, the narrator and his daughter place two roses on the grave—one for the father, one for Raul. The daughter learns how compassion ripples through lives, proving that kindness doesn’t die—it multiplies. Sometimes, those we overlook are the ones who give the most.
