Since ascending the throne, King Charles has embraced a more approachable and lighthearted style for the monarchy. Whether on walkabouts or at formal events, he’s known for stopping to chat, exchanging friendly banter with bystanders, and sharing gentle humor. This warm manner was on full display during the recent second state visit of Donald and Melania Trump to Windsor.
The invitation was extended in July, and on September 16, the presidential couple arrived in the UK for this rare repeat state visit. They were first welcomed by Prince William and Princess Kate before meeting King Charles and Queen Camilla. While the king and president shared significant time together, Melania engaged with both Kate and Camilla.
Charles’s knack for informal, friendly remarks is well documented. Last December, he caught international attention when he surprised American tourists in Notting Hill, apologizing for the slow foot traffic and joking about the weather: “You’re not getting too wet, I hope?” The same warmth accompanied his greeting of the Trumps.
As they arrived at Windsor Castle, Melania’s tailored gray Dior suit and striking wide-brimmed purple hat immediately drew attention. Forensic lipreader Nicola Hickling revealed that Trump opened with a formal greeting before Charles quipped to Melania, “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat,” prompting a genuine, hearty laugh from the first lady.
Fashion experts noted the hat’s practical elegance—a nod to royal etiquette while subtly keeping focus on the president. The matching purple tie Trump wore completed the coordinated look.
The visit followed traditional pomp, including a Guard of Honour review and a wreath-laying at Queen Elizabeth II’s grave, culminating in a state banquet.
