Frank Caprio, widely known as “the nicest judge in the world,” has passed away after a battle with cancer, leaving many stunned despite his age. His warmth, compassion, and fairness in the courtroom made him a beloved figure well beyond his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. Caprio’s traffic court videos, full of empathy and humanity, touched millions and turned him into a global sensation.
Born to Italian immigrants, Caprio grew up in Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood. After graduating from Providence College in 1958, he taught American government while attending Suffolk University Law School at night. His modest upbringing and dedication to service shaped the values that guided his life and career.
Caprio’s rise to fame began when videos of his courtroom interactions went viral, eventually earning over 1.7 billion views. Though hesitant at first, he credited his wife, Joyce, for encouraging him to share the footage. This led to the creation of Caught in Providence, a show that aired nationally and showcased his genuine care for the people who appeared before him.
Married for over 60 years, Caprio often spoke lovingly of Joyce, his partner in life and strongest supporter, especially during his illness. Together, they raised five children and built a life centered on family and faith.
Frank Caprio’s legacy extends far beyond the bench. He reminded the world that justice and kindness can coexist. Through his family, his show, and the lives he touched, his spirit of compassion will continue to inspire for generations to come.
