Eric Dane hospitalized after a fall related to his ALS condition

Eric Dane, star of Gray’s Anatomy, missed this year’s Emmys after suffering a fall related to his ALS diagnosis. Known for his role as Dr. McSteamy, Dane had planned to join the cast for the show’s 20th anniversary but instead spent the night in the hospital receiving stitches.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a rare, terminal neurodegenerative disease that gradually robs patients of motor control. Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis in April 2025, describing it as “a nasty disease” in an interview with The Washington Post.

Though disappointed, Dane said there was nothing he could do about missing the event. He expressed regret over not seeing co-star Jesse Williams, who presented an award on his behalf. Williams praised him, telling Entertainment Tonight, “He’s solid. The man’s just solid.”

Dane initially hesitated to share his diagnosis, fearing speculation, but said the overwhelming support has been heartening. Since going public, he has become an advocate for ALS awareness and research, recently meeting lawmakers to urge the renewal of the ACT for ALS, a bill supporting medical research.

Open about his condition’s progression, Dane shared in June that his right side has stopped working, while his left side still functions, calling it “sobering.”

Despite the challenges, Dane remains focused on his work and family. He expressed gratitude for his loved ones and looks forward to returning to the set of Euphoria for its third season.
