Kristi Noem Sparks Controversy Over AOC’s ICE Webinar
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate a February webinar hosted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), titled “Know Your Rights With ICE.” The event aimed to educate undocumented immigrants about their legal rights during interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Noem expressed concern that some advice given may have crossed legal boundaries, urging a DOJ review. “Public officials can sometimes cross a line,” she said in a Fox News interview, warning that such actions may complicate federal enforcement efforts.
During the webinar, Ocasio-Cortez encouraged calm during ICE encounters and stressed constitutional protections, claiming ICE often uses criminalizing rhetoric. Supporters framed the event as promoting civil liberties and community safety, particularly amid aggressive immigration tactics.
Critics, including former ICE Director Tom Homan, suggested the webinar could be seen as aiding individuals in the country illegally, potentially warranting DOJ involvement. Legal experts note a fine line between informing the public and appearing to encourage non-compliance, though sharing general legal information is typically protected speech.
At a Jackson Heights town hall, Ocasio-Cortez defended the session as an exercise of her First Amendment rights. “If that’s a problem, they can come for me,” she said defiantly.
While the DOJ has not announced any investigation, Noem’s comments have heightened scrutiny. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between immigration enforcement and community advocacy—and raises broader questions about the limits of public officials’ speech when advising undocumented individuals.
