Soldier dies on duty in Afghanistan – 2 days after the funeral, his wife opens his computer and finds a letter

A Soldier’s Final Letters: The Enduring Love of Captain Todd Weaver

In 2010, U.S. Army Captain Todd Weaver was killed by an IED during his second tour in Afghanistan. At just 26 years old, he left behind a grieving wife, Emma, and their 9-month-old daughter, Kiley, who would grow up without the father who adored her.

The Weaver family from Hampton, Virginia, was shattered. But days after Todd’s funeral, Emma found a final act of love that would guide her through the darkest nights.

The Discovery

When Todd’s belongings arrived from Afghanistan, Emma hesitated to open his laptop. Two days later, she found two Word documents: “Dear Emma” and “Dear Kiley.” Written in case he didn’t come home, Todd’s letters were a message of hope and love.

To Emma

Todd’s letter to his wife was full of warmth and reassurance.

“Although I may not be here right now, take comfort in the fact that I am watching over you,” he wrote.

He urged her not to be consumed by grief but to find joy again.

“Our time together was perfect. You made me happier than I ever thought I could be,” he said. “Please don’t think that I left you alone. I’ll always be there in your heart.”

He reminded Emma that their daughter was his greatest gift and encouraged her to stay strong for Kiley.

“Her smile and laughter represent all that is good and beautiful in this world,” he wrote.

He closed with hope and faith:

“Never be afraid to do what you need to do to be happy. Much better times are coming.”

To Kiley

The letter to their daughter was tender and full of guidance, meant for a little girl too young to read it.

“You have such a bright and beautiful future ahead of you,” Todd wrote. “Remember that your Daddy will always be proud of you and will always love you.”

He urged kindness, hard work, and care for her mother, ending with a powerful promise:

“Always remember that even though I’m not there to hold your hand, I’ll be with you in your heart.”

A Legacy of Love

These letters, written in a war zone, have touched hearts around the world. Emma calls them “the most precious gift” Todd could have left—a bridge between life and eternity, love and loss.

Captain Todd Weaver’s words remind us that true love doesn’t end with death. It lives on, steady and unseen, in those who remember.
