Tragic Plane Crash Near Roatan Island Claims 12 Lives Including Renowned Musician
A devastating plane crash off the coast of Roatan Island, Honduras, claimed the lives of twelve people, including celebrated Garifuna musician Aurelio Martinez. The Lanhsa airline flight went down shortly after takeoff on Monday, sparking an urgent emergency response.
The aircraft was carrying fourteen passengers and three crew members, according to Honduras’ transport ministry. Among the victims were two children, a French citizen, and a U.S. national, confirmed by local police. The flight was headed to La Ceiba on the mainland.
Rescue teams worked through the night at the crash site, located roughly one kilometer from Roatan International Airport, a popular tourist hub surrounded by coral reefs. Poor weather conditions have complicated search and recovery efforts, with one person still unaccounted for as of the latest updates, according to Franklin Borjas, local fire chief.
In response to the tragedy, President Xiomara Castro activated the Emergency Operations Committee (COE), coordinating efforts among the Armed Forces, National Police, Red Cross, Ministry of Health, and other agencies. Injured survivors were transported to hospitals in San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba for treatment.
President Castro expressed deep condolences to the families affected and pledged full government support. “May God protect people’s lives,” she said, as the nation mourns the loss and rallies to manage the crisis.
The Honduran community continues to grapple with the shock of this fatal accident while honoring the memory of those lost, including the beloved musician Aurelio Martinez.
