NY Attorney General Launches ICE Reporting Portal Amid Controversy
New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday announced a portal for residents to submit photos and videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, following a raid on Canal Street that resulted in the arrest of nine undocumented immigrants with criminal histories. James said the portal will allow her office to review reports of potential violations of law during federal immigration enforcement actions.
The announcement coincides with plans by House Oversight Democrats, led by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), to create a “master ICE tracker” to monitor ICE operations nationwide. Critics have raised concerns about privacy and safety, while legal experts note states can only take action if federal agents exceed their legal authority.
Separately, James is facing federal charges in Virginia for allegedly misrepresenting a Norfolk property as a second home to secure a lower mortgage rate, saving nearly $19,000. She is scheduled to appear in federal court Friday.
