Redistricting Battles Heat Up as Republicans Seek Advantage in Congress
Republican-led legislatures in multiple states are advancing new congressional maps aimed at expanding GOP representation ahead of upcoming elections, with encouragement from former President Donald Trump.
In North Carolina, Republicans are pushing a plan projected to give the party an edge in 11 of 14 congressional districts, up from 10, specifically targeting Democratic Rep. Don Davis’s seat. The map passed the state Senate despite Democratic protests. Under state law, Democratic Governor Josh Stein cannot veto redistricting proposals, making passage likely. GOP leaders argue the plan reflects voter preferences and Trump’s previous electoral success, emphasizing its importance for maintaining Republican influence.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom is pursuing a countermeasure. A proposed ballot initiative would temporarily suspend the state’s independent redistricting commission to create five new Democrat-leaning districts, aiming to offset Republican gains in other states.
