Genital Hygiene Tips: Caring for Delicate Skin
The genital area and surrounding skin are very delicate and can easily become irritated or damaged. Proper care can help keep this sensitive area clean, healthy, and comfortable.
1. Wash gently.
Use plain water or an emollient (such as aqueous cream, E45, or Doublebase) instead of regular soap, which can be too harsh. These products are inexpensive and available at pharmacies, supermarkets, or online. You can apply the emollient directly to the genital skin before bathing or showering — it acts as a protective barrier against other soaps or shampoos. Rinse thoroughly afterward. Emollients are safe for daily use, and if your skin feels dry, apply a small amount before bed.
2. Let your skin breathe.
Genital skin benefits from exposure to fresh air. In colder months, multiple clothing layers can trap heat and moisture, while in summer, sweat can build up. Whenever possible — for example, while relaxing at home or sleeping — go without underwear. Loose cotton pajamas offer comfort and modesty while allowing airflow.
3. Choose the right underwear.
Opt for cotton or cotton-gusseted underwear, which allows your skin to breathe. Synthetic fabrics can trap heat and moisture, leading to irritation. Wash your underwear with non-biological detergent or liquid to avoid harsh chemicals.
Caring for your genital skin with gentle washing, breathable fabrics, and good hygiene habits helps maintain comfort and prevent irritation.
