In 1990, British Airways pilot Tim Lancaster faced a life-threatening ordeal when his cockpit windshield blew out at 17,000 feet during a flight from Birmingham to Málaga, Spain. Partially sucked out of the aircraft, his legs were the only part remaining inside.
Flight attendant Nigel Ogden held Lancaster’s legs for 20 harrowing minutes, despite frostbite and injury, while co-pilot Alastair Atchison stabilized the plane for an emergency landing. Another attendant, Simon Rogers, later assisted Ogden. Passengers witnessed the terrifying scene as the crew worked to prevent Lancaster’s full ejection.
Lancaster survived with frostbite and fractures. The incident, later featured on Mayday, highlighted both the crew’s bravery and the durability of the BAC 1-11 aircraft. It remains a remarkable story of human resilience and aviation engineering.
