Two teenage stepbrothers, Tavayne Weir, 17, and D’andre Graham, 16, tragically lost their lives after going swimming at the Springvale Recreation Area in Sanford, Maine. The area is a well-known swimming spot where daredevil jumps from a 30-foot cliff are common, and lifeguards are on duty during the day.
In July of last year, the boys told their family they were going swimming but didn’t return by their 10 p.m. curfew. Their parents alerted authorities, and police discovered their car at the site around 11 p.m., but the teenagers were nowhere to be found. The Sanford Fire Department joined the search, and after about an hour and a half, rescuers located Tavayne and D’andre submerged underwater.
Police Major Matthew Gagne explained that the exact circumstances of their entry into the water remain unclear. “We don’t know if they were jumping or just swimming,” he said, noting currents could have affected their location.
A small comfort to the grieving family is that the brothers were found holding onto each other, demonstrating the deep bond they shared. A GoFundMe page set up to assist with funeral expenses stated: “They showed incredible courage and loyalty, holding on to each other until the very end.”
The fundraiser described how Tavayne and D’andre “always considered each other brothers,” and when their parents married, their bond became official. Growing up in Jamaica, they did everything together—from basketball and biking to gaming.
The loss of Tavayne and D’andre has left their family and community heartbroken. Their story is a poignant reminder of love, loyalty, and the preciousness of life.
