Golden Globe Winner Sally Kirkland Dies at 84
Veteran actress Sally Kirkland, best known for her Golden Globe–winning performance in Anna (1987), has died at the age of 84.
According to TMZ, Kirkland passed away just days after entering hospice care in Palm Springs, California. She had reportedly been battling dementia since last year and was recently treated for life-threatening infections following a fall in the shower.
A GoFundMe page organized by friends shared that the fall left her with “injured ribs, a hurt foot, and multiple cuts and bruises.”
Kirkland trained at both the Actors Studio and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before rising through New York’s Off-Broadway scene in the 1960s, where she became part of Andy Warhol’s Factory circle.
Her performance in Anna earned her widespread acclaim — including a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Kirkland appeared in over 200 films and television projects, including JFK, Bruce Almighty, and Roseanne.
Known for her bold spirit and dedication to the craft, Kirkland remained active in Hollywood well into her later years. Her legacy continues through her body of work and the generations of actors she inspired.
