Tragic Death of Michael Brudenell-Bruce, 8th Marquess of Ailesbury, at 98
Michael Brudenell-Bruce, the 98-year-old 8th Marquess of Ailesbury, tragically died after falling from a bedroom window in his West London home. The accident happened while he was trying to free his cat, Honeybun, who had become stuck, according to his long-term partner, Teresa Marshall de Paoli, 88.
Teresa discovered the Marquess lying in a pool of blood and believes he lost his balance during the attempt to lift the window. “It was a freak accident,” she said. “He had blood all over himself. I asked, ‘Oh, my dear, what happened?’ but he had already passed away.”
Emergency services arrived promptly, but the Marquess was pronounced dead at the scene in Shepherd’s Bush. Police initially treated the scene as a potential crime investigation, though no foul play was suspected. Teresa called the Marquess’ daughter, Lady Kathryn Brudenell-Bruce, who rushed to the home. The two women stayed overnight in the drawing room as police conducted their inquiries.
“He had been there for an hour or more, and there was nothing we could do,” Teresa recalled. “I said my goodbyes and covered him with his favorite aftershave.”
Michael Brudenell-Bruce had a distinguished military career as a captain in the Royal Horse Guards before becoming a stockbroker. He was well-known in British aristocratic circles and was married three times. His granddaughter, Bo Bruce, is known for her appearance on the BBC’s The Voice.
Before relocating to Shepherd’s Bush, the Marquess and Teresa lived for 16 years in a cottage on the family’s vast 4,500-acre Savernake Forest estate in Wiltshire. His passing marks the end of a life deeply rooted in British heritage and public service.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed the death was unexpected but not suspicious, and the family has been informed.
