Tragic Accident and Community Response
What began as a normal September night near the Cal State Fullerton campus turned into a life-altering tragedy for Titan athletes Lauren Turner and Ashlyn Gwynn. The two teammates were riding electric scooters near campus when they were struck by a box truck, an impact that immediately left both young women critically injured. Nineteen-year-old Turner never regained consciousness. After weeks of intensive medical care and the unwavering presence of her family and teammates, she passed away on November 7, leaving the CSUF community grieving the loss of a beloved friend, athlete, and student.
Turner’s family expressed their heartbreak while grounding their grief in faith, writing, “Our hearts are broken… yet we take great comfort in knowing she is now in the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior.” Teammates echoed that sentiment, remembering Turner for her warmth, positivity, and ability to make others feel valued. “The impact she made… is immeasurable,” they shared, emphasizing the deep void left by her passing.
Gwynn survived the crash but faces a long and difficult road to recovery. Her family described her progress as remarkable, calling it “a miracle in her healing” while acknowledging the challenges still ahead. Police noted that neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, though alcohol and drugs were not factors.
In response to the tragedy, head coach Demian Brown implemented a mandatory helmet rule for all players, hoping to protect student-athletes and prevent future accidents. Meanwhile, the broader community continues to show support. GoFundMe campaigns for both families have raised ongoing donations, offering financial help and a visible reminder of how many people have been touched by the lives, struggles, and strength of both Turner and Gwynn.
