Jimmy Kimmel’s Return Hits Roadblock as ABC Affiliates Refuse to Air Show
Jimmy Kimmel’s much-anticipated return to late-night TV has hit a major snag. While Disney announced the comeback of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a number of ABC affiliates across the country — operated by Sinclair Inc. — are now refusing to air the show.
The backlash stems from controversial comments Kimmel made regarding the recent, high-profile killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. His remarks, which included criticism of Donald Trump’s response to the incident, sparked a firestorm online. In response, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely, citing a need to “avoid further inflaming a tense situation.”
While many supported the pause, others — including celebrities — slammed the move as an attack on free speech. After days of internal discussions, Disney announced Kimmel would return to air on Tuesday, stating: “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show.”
However, Sinclair, which owns ABC affiliates in nearly 40 major markets and is known for its conservative leanings, isn’t on board. The company announced it will preempt Kimmel’s show with local news programming instead, pending further discussions.
Sinclair issued three demands before considering a return: a formal apology from Kimmel to the Kirk family, a personal donation to them and Turning Point USA, and talks with ABC about professionalism and accountability in network programming.
“Until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold national broadcast standards, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will remain off our air,” Sinclair said.
For now, Kimmel’s return remains uncertain in many parts of the country — leaving fans to wonder when, or if, they’ll see the late-night host back on their screens.
